When can my baby start finger foods and textured meals?
Introducing textures to your baby does not have to feel complicated. It is really about taking small, steady steps and letting your baby get used to food in their own time.
Think about the grater in the image. Each side gives a different texture. You would not start with the roughest side. You begin fine and then slowly move to coarser textures. Feeding works the same way.

Start with foods that are easy to swallow. Hand mashed or pureed meals are perfect at this stage. Soft fruits, well cooked vegetables, simple dals all work well.
Your baby is still figuring out how to handle food in their mouth. It might look slow or messy, and that is completely okay.

Now you can begin offering soft finger foods, always with you nearby. Sit with your baby and eat together. Show them how you chew. They learn a lot just by watching you.
You can also try soft foods that they can bite and mash with their gums. Ripe mango pulp and soft pieces of chicken can be introduced.
It is normal to feel worried about choking. Many parents do. But gagging and choking are not the same. If you are unsure, this will help

At 8 months
This is when you can start increasing texture a little more. Food does not need to be completely smooth anymore. You can leave it slightly mashed or give small soft pieces.
Like moving to a different side of the grater, the texture changes gradually. This helps your baby learn how to chew and manage different foods.
Every baby goes at their own pace. Some will accept textures quickly, others need more time. There is no need to rush. Just keep offering and stay patient.
